Pain isn’t a punishment, it’s a portal 🌀

When pain shows up—whether for you or your patients—it’s easy to see it as a punishment. Especially when it’s sudden, serious, or seemingly out of nowhere.

You’ve probably heard patients ask:

  • What did I do to deserve this?
  • Should I have done something differently?
  • Why me?

The truth? Pain is not punishment.

Pain is a portal 🌀

It’s the body’s way of calling for attention, pointing us toward what needs healing. Sometimes that means the physical body (more rest, better alignment, supporting tissues). Sometimes it’s the life around the body: relationships, stress, or the roles we’re playing that no longer serve us.

I’ll never forget one of my patients, "Austin". He was in his early 50s and navigating a resurgence of aggressive cancer. His greatest fear wasn’t death itself; it was leaving his two daughters without financial security.

Through our treatments, our conversations shifted. We started talking about aliveness, legacy, and what we can share with the people we love right now. Eventually, Austin chose to take his daughters on a life-changing trip to Hawaii. They went surfing, flew in a helicopter, and soaked in memories he once thought were impossible because of old limiting beliefs about money and responsibility.

That pain, that diagnosis, became a portal 👉🏻 not to despair, but to courage, joy, and connection.

The last I heard, he had left a difficult relationship, moved to live closer to his daughters, and was thriving. I don’t know where he is today, but I think of him often as a reminder of what can happen when we walk through the portal our symptoms offer us.

When we see pain this way, it shifts everything. It moves us from fear and blame to curiosity and compassion. And as clinicians, that shift not only transforms our patients’ experience—it transforms our care.

🎧 This week on The Body Oracle...

Your success CAN look different 🏅
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing more about my shift into solo practice. I'm not gonna' lie.... I fought the idea of "downsizing" for a while.  Probably several 10's of thousands of dollars too long.... I was straight up attached to a beautiful clinic space I had built out from the studs. I LIKED having people walk into my clinic and say "WOW!"It felt GOOD , and prestigious and suc...
👩🏻‍💼 What replaced my receptionist...
One of the biggest shifts for me going from a larger clinic to solo practice? Losing my reception team. And I’ll be honest, this was not really something I was excited to "lose" For years, I had built my schedule around it: Back-to-back patients. Someone else answering calls. Someone else handling payments.   Reception was essential to my practice. And I used to justify it as:“It lets me fo...
Flying Solo in practice 🪶
When I decided to shift back into solo practice, I had a whole story in my head about how it was going to feel.... 💭 I thought I’d miss the buzz of a bigger team.💭 I thought I might feel like I was “downgrading"💭 I even considered that I'd probably have to work more to make it all make sense financially.   And honestly? That’s not how it played out at all. What surprised me wasn’t what I los...
