Pain isn’t a punishment, it’s a portal 🌀

When pain shows up—whether for you or your patients—it’s easy to see it as a punishment. Especially when it’s sudden, serious, or seemingly out of nowhere.

You’ve probably heard patients ask:

  • What did I do to deserve this?
  • Should I have done something differently?
  • Why me?

The truth? Pain is not punishment.

Pain is a portal 🌀

It’s the body’s way of calling for attention, pointing us toward what needs healing. Sometimes that means the physical body (more rest, better alignment, supporting tissues). Sometimes it’s the life around the body: relationships, stress, or the roles we’re playing that no longer serve us.

I’ll never forget one of my patients, "Austin". He was in his early 50s and navigating a resurgence of aggressive cancer. His greatest fear wasn’t death itself; it was leaving his two daughters without financial security.

Through our treatments, our conversations shifted. We started talking about aliveness, legacy, and what we can share with the people we love right now. Eventually, Austin chose to take his daughters on a life-changing trip to Hawaii. They went surfing, flew in a helicopter, and soaked in memories he once thought were impossible because of old limiting beliefs about money and responsibility.

That pain, that diagnosis, became a portal 👉🏻 not to despair, but to courage, joy, and connection.

The last I heard, he had left a difficult relationship, moved to live closer to his daughters, and was thriving. I don’t know where he is today, but I think of him often as a reminder of what can happen when we walk through the portal our symptoms offer us.

When we see pain this way, it shifts everything. It moves us from fear and blame to curiosity and compassion. And as clinicians, that shift not only transforms our patients’ experience—it transforms our care.

🎧 This week on The Body Oracle...

My Genius Investment Move at 17yo 🤓
Hey there Healers! When I was 17, I thought I had this whole money thing figured out. I had just learned about compound interest…and I remember thinking: “Oh—this is how people get rich.” So I took $100 from my movie theatre job and proudly put it into an RRSP. I felt like a financial genius....and did nothing further.... Fast forward about 15 years… My parents kept getting these state...

Hey there Healers!   Last month I was talking all about numbers in practice and I decided this month to take it one step further... We’re talking about real numbers. Not theories. Not “one day I’ll figure this out.” Actual numbers—what you’re making, what you’re keeping, and what that could turn into over time. Because the truth is… a lot of you have reached out in March...   You've said t...
The Real Definition of a WELLthy Practice 🪜
Hey there Healers!   We’ve talked about greed. We’ve talked about bookkeeping. We’ve talked about downsizing, alignment, and time wealth. So let’s land this clearly. What is a WELL-thy Practice? ❌ It’s not just higher revenue.❌ It’s not hustle.❌ It’s not scaling for the sake of scaling.❌ It’s not burnout disguised as ambition. A WELL-thy Practice is this: ✅ A practitioner who is well in body, ...
